Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is coming to Switch 2 this summer

Square Enix have announced that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 this year. The reveal was made during the Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase, which confirmed a release date of June 3rd.

Preorders for the game start today, with the physical edition of the game including reversible cover art and a Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy card. The card features alternate artwork of Zack Fair, illustrated by creative director Tetsuya Nomura.

With Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth being a current-gen only title, fans will naturally be curious to see how Nintendo’s hybrid console handles the larger scale sequel. However, according to series director Naomi Hamaguchi, fans need not worry about performance on Switch 2.

Speaking with VGC, Hamaguchi revealed that the team’s experience optimising for PC and Steam Deck will ensure a high quality version for Switch 2:

“I think we got a really good response to the first game on PC, and that’s really helped us and given us the know-how and the ability to keep that going, reflect on that, and maybe even push it further in Rebirth and in the third game in the series going forward,” Hamaguchi said.

“So what I want to say is, because of all that experimentation stuff we’ve done on the PC to make sure of that, Nintendo players in the future, you really don’t need to worry at all. They’re going to get a version that is just as satisfying and just as high quality as the first game, if not higher.”

The first part of the remake trilogy, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, released on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S last month, six years after its initial launch on PS4.

Since its release, the Switch 2 version of the game has been well received by players and critics alike, topping the charts on both the US and Japanese eShop.

The physical edition has also proven to be popular, likely due to the inclusion of a Final Fantasy themed Magic: The Gathering booster pack. Various US retailers, including Best Buy and Target, have reported little to no stock following the game’s Switch 2 debut.
