The Witcher Remake is currently on hold, CD Projekt Red says

CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the remake of the first Witcher game is currently on hold, as its developer focuses on the upcoming Witcher 3 expansion.

In a statement issued to Gamespot, a CD Projekt Red spokesperson confirmed that while the remake hasn’t been cancelled, it has been placed on the back burner until Songs of the Past is finished.

The statement also revealed that some developers at Fool’s Theory are supporting development on The Witcher 4, with the remake sharing some of its architecture with the series’ next mainline entry.

“[The] Fool’s Theory team is focused mainly on the development of Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, while a relatively small part of their team is supporting the development of The Witcher 4,” the statement reads.

“As we have previously announced, the development on The Witcher Remake has been temporarily integrated with The Witcher 4 due to production process dependencies

“As The Witcher Remake will be built on the foundation laid by The Witcher 4, we need to have the necessary assets, tools, and pipelines ready for efficient development.”

Announced in 2022, CD Projekt Red described The Witcher remake as a “full-fledged remake” that will be rebuilt “from the ground up” in Unreal Engine 5.

With Songs of the Past releasing in 2027, and The Witcher 4 currently planned for release in 2028, it seems very unlikely that we’ll see The Witcher remake before 2029.
