Studio MDHR reveals that a Cuphead sequel and spin-off are in development

Studio MDHR, developers of Cuphead, have announced that two new Cuphead games are in development. The developer announced both projects during this year’s Summer Game Fest presentation.

The first is a brand new, hand-animated Cuphead game, a sequel to the studio’s 2017 debut title.

“Our talented team is hard at work on this ambitious project, which will take Cuphead and pals on a fresh, exciting journey,” a post from Studio MDHR reads. “There are so many things about this project that have us energized, and in true Studio MDHR fashion, we are pushing ourselves to continue improving on our craft in all areas.”

“Development is still in the early stages, but rest assured that we’ll have lots more to share when the time is right.”

The second game, which is being developed by a smaller team, is an 8-bit action platformer, which promises “arcade-quality graphics, amazing sound, and 32 dazzling colours!”

Inspired by classic 80s platformers, Mighty Cuphead Adventure is a true callback to the games of the era, with Studio MDHR saying that the game is being developed to the specifications of the Sega Master System. The developer has even claimed that the game will run on Sega’s 1985 console, having been coded in Assembly Language.

“This is not just a retro-style game: it’s a game built from the ground up with all the unique limitations of a 1980s video game studio.”

“We are so grateful to our amazing fan community for their support and patience,” the post concludes. “We know it’s been some time since we’ve shared a glimpse into what’s happening here at Studio MDHR, and we couldn’t be more excited for the road ahead.”
