Santa Monica Studio reveals God of War Laufey, the next mainline entry in the series

Sony’s Santa Monica Studio has revealed the next mainline entry in the God of War series: God of War Laufey.

Revealed during today’s State of Play presentation, God of War Laufey stars Faye, the wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus, as she is transported to the afterlife of the gods: The Everywhen.

“Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning,” a description for the game reads. “Awakening unexpectedly in a strange land after her funeral, Faye discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are now at risk.”

“To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods — the Everywhen — where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic.”

The game’s main setting, the Everywhen, is described as the “birthplace and endpoint to which all magic returns,” a realm where all gods and mythical creatures are sent once they die. The demo sees Faye encounter Sekhmet, the Egyptian goddess of war, healing and the sun, and Begtse, a Dharma protector in Tibetan and Mongolian Buddhism.

“Faye quickly discovers that despite the impossibility of awakening from death in a place that defies everything she thought she knew, it may prove even harder to leave while the natural flow of magic has been disrupted.”

“Paradise or prison — Faye will need to uncover hidden mysteries about the true nature of the Everywhen throughout her journey if she is to have any hope of finding her way home. “

With strength to rival the likes of Kratos and Thor, Santa Monica Studio says that combat in God of War Laufey builds upon combat from the modern entries, while also adding “some old school, classic DNA of the Greek era.”

As the Golden Hand of the Jötnar, Faye harnesses powerful abilities amplified by her presence in the Everywhen, including the power to manipulate souls. Using her golden palm strike, Faye can detach enemies’ souls from their bodies, opening up new opportunities in combat.

Deborah Ann Woll returns to lead the cast as Faye, with Jack Quaid (The Boys, Novocaine) and Perlina Lau (Friday Night Bites) supporting as Phranque, the cosmic cube and Rue, the enchanted ribbon guardian.

“Together they will embark on a journey deep into the Everywhen that will pit them against a fantastic cast of gods and creatures from across mythology, as well as beings native to the Everywhen itself.”

Despite a lengthy, 20-minute showing to close out today’s State of Play, no information regarding the game’s release date (or release year) has been provided.
