Nintendo Direct reveals new Donkey Kong Bananza details

Nintendo has revealed new details on Donkey Kong Bananza during a dedicated 17-minute-long Nintendo Direct presentation. Alongside fresh gameplay and plot details, the presentation also revealed that Donkey Kong will be joined by Pauline, a long-time series character.

In the game, Pauline is originally known as Odd Rock, the purple rock companion that’s been featured alongside Donkey Kong. Though it’s not yet known when Odd Rock turns into Pauline, it’s clear that this version of the character is significantly younger than previous iterations and has dreams of becoming a singer.

Pauline’s reveal will come as less of a surprise to some fans, as Nintendo’s Korean website mistakenly posted incorrect artwork for the game, which featured Pauline on the box art rather than Odd Rock.

One of the main features showcased during the Direct was Bananza transformations, which allows Donkey Kong to transform into a stronger version of himself, as well as other animals, such as a zebra or an ostrich. Each animal has their own special abilities and lasts for a limited time.

In addition to Bananza transformations, various other abilities can be acquired and upgraded throughout the game using skill points. Players will also be able to unlock a variety of outfits for Donkey Kong and Pauline, with many outfits offering enhanced abilities or entirely new ones.

Donkey Kong Bananza will also include co-op support, with one player controlling Donkey Kong and another playing as Pauline. Using the Joy-Con’s mouse controls, Pauline can cast shouts to attack enemies or destroy terrain. The game will support co-op play both locally and via GameShare, allowing two separate systems to play with a single copy of the game.

A Donkey Kong Bananza Amiibo featuring Donkey Kong and Pauline will also be available at launch. Scanning the Amiibo will give players early access to Pauline’s Diva Dress.

Donkey Kong Bananza will release on July 17th exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2.
