Sony acquires Housemarque

Sony has announced that Housemarque are the latest developer to join the PlayStation Studios family after an acquisition deal had been reached with the studio. No further details regarding the deal have been disclosed.

The Finnish developer have a long history of collaborating with PlayStation; from Super Stardust HD on the PS3, to PS5-exclusive Returnal, Housemarque have been providing their unique arcade style to PlayStation fans for nearly 15 years.

In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Head of Worldwide Studios Herman Hulst believes that the Housemarque acquisition “enhances the creative force of PlayStation Studios”.

“Housemarque’s recent release of Returnal proves the studio is one with incredible vision, capable of creating memorable new games that resonate with our community.” Hulst said.

Speaking about the acquisition, Housemarque Co-founder and Managing Director Ilari Kuittinen claims that it will provide the studio with “a clear future and a stable opportunity to continue delivering on gameplay centric approaches, while still experimenting with new methods of narrative delivery and pushing the boundaries of this modern artform.”

“With the backing of SIE and its family of studios supporting us, we can truly grow into our place in the industry and show what Housemarque can create with no limitations.”

With the studio now officially part of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Housemarque will join the likes of Naughty Dog (The Last of Us, Uncharted), Sucker Punch (Ghost of Tsushima, Infamous) and Insomniac Games (Ratchet & Clank, Spider-Man) as part of PlayStation’s first-party studios.
