Subnautica 2 developer Unknown Worlds has revealed that the game has sold over two million copies within 12 hours of its early access launch.
The sequel to the popular underwater survival game was released into early access yesterday, with the game’s official X account announcing that over one million copies had been sold within an hour of release.
A matter of hours later, and Unknown Worlds announced that the game had surpassed two million copies sold in less than 24 hours. At the time of writing, the game is the number one top selling game on Steam, with a peak concurrent player count of 467,582.
According to Unknown Worlds, the overall peak concurrent player count across all platforms is around 651,000, meaning that roughly 72% of the player base are coming from Valve’s PC platform. The remaining 18% is comprised of players on Xbox and PC via the Epic Games Store.

News of the games sales follows a dramatic development cycle, dominated by a legal battle between Unknown Worlds co-founders and publisher Krafton.
Last year, Unknown Worlds CEO Ted Gill and co-founders Charlie Cleveland and Max McGuire were accused by Krafton of an “absence of core leadership” and subsequently fired.
However, the trio claimed that the publisher’s decision to fire them before announcing a release date for the game was a deliberate move to prevent paying out a $250 million sales bonus to the studio.
A court would later side with Gill, Cleveland and McGuire, reinstating Gill as CEO and extending the eligibility period for the bonus to September 15th.
