Nintendo announces Switch 2 price hike, rising to $500 in the US

Nintendo has announced that it will be raising the price of the Nintendo Switch 2 in the US, Canada, Europe and Japan.

“In light of changes in market conditions, and after considering the global business outlook, Nintendo will revise the manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) of the Nintendo Switch 2 system and Nintendo Switch systems,” the company said in a statement.

Starting May 25, Nintendo’s latest hybrid console will cost Â¥59,980 in Japan, a rise of Â¥10,000 from its current price of Â¥49,980. It should be noted that this price increase only impacts the Japanese-language version of the console; the price of the multi-language system will remain unchanged.

All models of the original Switch will also receive a price hike in Japan, with the standard Switch rising from ¥32,978 to ¥43,980, Switch OLED from ¥37,980 to ¥47,980, and Switch Lite from ¥21,978 to ¥29,980.

Nintendo is also raising the price of all Nintendo Switch Online subscription plans in Japan to align them with prices in other regions. The price changes are as follows:

Nintendo Switch Online:

  • 1 Month – from Â¥306 to Â¥400
  • 3 months – from Â¥815 to Â¥1,000
  • 12 months – from Â¥2,400 to Â¥3,000
  • Family membership (12 months) – from Â¥4,500 to Â¥5,800

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack:

  • 12 months – from Â¥4,900 to Â¥5,900
  • Family Membership (12 months) – from Â¥8,900 to Â¥9,900

As for Western markets, price changes will take effect starting September 1st. Here are the changes for the US, Canada and Europe:

  • US – From $449.99 to $499.99
  • Canada – From $629.99 to $679.99
  • Europe – €469.99 to €499.99

Price rises for both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 will be implemented in more regions, with announcements expected from the company’s subsidiaries soon.

“We sincerely apologize for the impact these price revisions may have on our customers and other stakeholders, and we deeply appreciate your understanding,” the statement concludes.

Until now, Nintendo has resisted pressure to raise the price of its flagship console, despite rising component costs caused primarily by demand from AI data centers.

Earlier this year, Sony announced significant price increases to all PlayStation 5 models, which saw PS5 Pro prices climb to an eye-watering $899.99 / €899.99 / £789.99.
