Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has spoken about the possibility of L.A. Noire making a return, giving a sliver of hope to fans of the cult classic detective game.
According to Game File (paywalled), Zelnick was speaking at iicon in Las Vegas when he was asked if L.A. Noire would ever make a return. “Yes, you never know,” Zelnick said. “Broadly, we’re looking at doing something in the future with all of our intellectual property.”
“There’s nothing to announce on L.A. Noire specifically, and if there were, it would be Rockstar announcing it, not me,” Zelnick added. “But in any case, with regard to our legacy IP, the teams are always looking at what we have and we’re always thinking about it.”
“The question is, at any given time, do we have a team that’s passionate about working on that?”
Originally released in 2011, L.A. Noire told the story of war veteran turned cop Cole Phelps and his rise through the LAPD. The game was a critical and commercial success, shipping more than 4 million copies in its first month.
The game’s MotionScan facial animation system received high praise, which was used in the game’s interrogation sequences, where players had to read the faces of characters to determine if they were lying or not.
The game was rereleased in 2017 for PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, followed by a VR spinoff called The Case Files in 2019.
When asked about a possible new L.A. Noire game in 2021, Cole Phelps actor Aaron Stanton said that he had “never heard a word” about another game.

“If there was another story, I would be curious what they would tell since Cole Phelps died,” Stanton said.
“I do get recognized from time to time from the game, which always makes me think how incredible the MotionScan technology was.”
