Throughout your playthrough of Pokémon FireRed and/or LeafGreen, you’ll come across plenty of items to help you during your journey across the Kanto region.
Most items are single use or are found in limited quantities. Others, known as key items, are infinitely reusable and mostly essential to progress.
Here’s a list of some of the most essential items and key items found in the game:

Key Items
How to get the Bike:
The bike is a key item that allows you to move faster throughout certain areas of the Kanto Region, such as towns, cities and roads.
You can get a bike from the Bike Shop in Cerulean City; however, you’ll notice that it’s being sold for the insanely high price of 1,000,000, a literally unobtainable amount of money. Thankfully, there is an alternative method that allows you to get a bike for free.
Go to Vermilion City and visit the Pokémon Fan Club located just above the Vermilion City Gym. Once inside, speak to the Chairman, who will give you a Bike Voucher to use at the shop. Head back to the Bike Shop in Cerulean City and trade in your Bike Voucher for a brand new bike!
How to get the Coin Case:
Obtaining the Coin Case will allowing you to collect coins and play games at the Game Corner in Celadon City. The game corner offers prizes like rare Pokémon and TMs for powerful moves, making it a worthwhile visit.
To get the Coin Case, you’ll need to speak to the man who’s found at a restaurant in the northwest part of Celadon City.
How to get the Itemfinder:
The Itemfinder does exactly as the name suggests, locating hidden items on the ground. It can be obtained from one of Professor Oak’s aides.
To find them, go to the east gate on Route 11 and head inside. Once inside, make your way upstairs to find the aide, who will give you the Itemfinder if you have registered complete data on at least 30 Pokémon.
How to get the Poké Flute:
The Poké Flute is an item that allows you to wake up the Snorlaxs blocking the paths on Route 12 and Route 16.
To get the Poké Flute, you will need the Silph Scope, which is found in Team Rocket’s underground base in Celedon City.
If you don’t already have it, here’s how to get the Silph Scope.
You can get the Poké Flute from Mr Fuji, who’s found at the top of Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town. Once at the top of the tower, you’ll have to battle three Team Rocket members to rescue Mr Fuji.
After you’ve beaten Team Rocket, speak with Mr Fuji and he’ll meet you back at his house, where he’ll give you the Poké Flute.
How to get the Old Rod:
The Old Rod is the first obtainable fishing rod in the game, allowing you to fish for Magikarp in lakes and oceans.

You can get the Old Rod from the Fishing Guru in Vermilion City, who’s found in the house to the left of the Pokémon Center.
How to get the Good Rod:
The Good Rod is an enhanced fishing rod, allowing you to catch more types of Pokémon from the water.

The Good Rod can be obtained from the Fishing Guru’s older brother in Fuchsia City. The Fishing Guru’s older brother is located in the second house to the right of the Pokémon Center.
How to get the Super Rod:
The Super Rod is the best fishing rod available, allowing you to catch Pokémon like Gyarados and Dragonair.

The Super Rod is given to the player by the Fishing Guru’s younger brother, who can be found in a house on Route 12, South of Lavender Town. As the house is located past the Snorlax blocking the route, you will need the Poké flute in order to get the Super Rod.

How to get the Silph Scope
The Silph Scope gives you the ability to identify ghosts in the Pokémon Tower, making it possible to catch Pokémon such as Gastly and Haunter.
The Silph Scope is also needed to access the top of the Pokémon Tower where Mr Fuji can be found.
The Silph Scope can be obtained after beating Giovanni in Team Rocket’s underground base. To reach the base, approach the Team Rocket member in the Game Corner and battle them.
After winning the battle, interact with the poster on the wall, which reveals a staircase to the underground base.
How to get Tea:
Tea is an item you’ll need in order to bypass the gate guards surrounding Saffron City. By giving the Tea to any of the thirsty gate guards, you’ll be able to enter Saffron City to take on the gym leader Sabrina.
The Tea can be picked up from an old lady on the first floor of Celadon Mansion, which is located east of Celadon Department Store.
Once you’ve acquired the Tea, head to any of the gates surrounding Saffron City and give the Tea to the thirsty guard. Once you’ve handed the Tea over, the guard will allow you into Saffron City and inform all the other gate guards to let you pass.
How to get the Vs. Seeker:
The Vs. Seeker is an item that lets you rematch any trainers you’ve already battled, making it a very useful item for exp and money grinding.
To get it, visit the Pokémon Center in Vermilion City and speak to the girl stood in front of the counter.

How to get the Amulet Coin:
The Amulet Coin is an item that can be held by a Pokémon. If the Pokémon holding the Amulet Coin participates in the battle, then you will receive double the usual amount of prize money for winning.
The Amulet Coin can be obtained from one of Professor Oak’s aides. This particular aide can be found at the Route 16 gate, west of Celadon City. Once inside, head upstairs to find the aide, who will give you the Amulet Coin once you have completed data for 40 Pokémon.
The Exp. Share allows the Pokémon holding it to receive a share of the exp from any battle, even if they didn’t take part. It’s an extremely useful item for levelling up weaker Pokémon until they are capable of battling at the required level.
The item can be obtained from one of Professor Oak’s aides. To find them, head to the Route 15 gate east of Fuchsia City. Once you’ve entered the gate, head upstairs. There, you’ll find one of Professor Oak’s aides, who will give you an Exp Share once you have registered complete data on 50 Pokémon in the Pokédex.
How to get Leftovers:
Leftovers are an item to be held by a Pokémon and used during battle. Unlike other items, Leftovers can be used multiple times in battle, recovering 1/16th of the holders max HP per turn. Leftovers also aren’t consumed after use, making them much better for healing than Oran berries.
Leftovers can be found in two locations, both require the Itemfinder and the Poké Flute. If you haven’t picked up the Itemfinder or Poké Flute yet, check out these guides:
Location 1: Route 12
The first location you can find Leftovers is on Route 12, south of Lavender Town and East of Vermilion City.
To get the Leftovers, you’ll have to deal with the Snorlax blocking the path. Once you’ve either caught or defeated the Snorlax, use the Itemfinder in the exact spot where it was sleeping to get the Leftovers.
Location 2: Route 16
The second place you can get Leftovers is outside the Route 16 gate west of Celadon City.
Head to the gate entrance and use the Poké Flute to wake up the sleeping Snorlax. After catching or defeating it, use the Itemfinder on the exact spot where Snorlax was sleeping to acquire some Leftovers.
