A Ghost of Yōtei State of Play is coming this week

PlayStation has confirmed that its dedicated Ghost of Yōtei State of Play presentation will take place later this week. The previously-announced presentation will be livestreamed on both PlayStation’s YouTube and Twitch channels this Thursday, July 10th, at 2pm PT / 5pm ET / 10pm BST / 11pm CEST.

Hosted by Sucker Punch Creative Directors Jason Connell and Nate Fox, the presentation will include “nearly 20 minutes of Ghost of Yōtei gameplay”.

“Beyond sharing more about Atsu’s quest for vengeance, we’re excited to show off her new weapons, new ways to personalize your journey at the edge of Japan, new special modes, and much more,” a post on the PlayStation Blog reads.

In an interview with Japanese publication Famitsu, Creative Directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell shed new light on various details such as story and setting, as well as resepectfully represetning Japanese culture.

“The main theme of this game is revenge,” Fox said. “The main character, Atsu, has a great deal of trauma in her childhood and embarks on a journey of revenge.”

The game’s story will focus on Atsu’s quest for vengeance against a group known as the Yōtei six, a band of warriors and outlaws who’ve caused suffering and destruction in the region. A sash worn by Atsu displays the names of each member: The Snake, The Oni, The Kitsune, The Spider, The Dragon, and Lord Saito.

Fox and Connell also revealed that they had travelled to Japan as part research trips to the game’s setting, Ezo, a region that is now known as Hokkaidō. Both Fox and Connel believe that the trip to Japan’s northeast has allowed them to create a more faithful depiction of the area, its culture, and its indigenous people, the Ainu.

“Various advisors have assisted us in the representation of the period, including the Ainu people and Ainu culture,” Fox said. “Like with our previous game, we have also thoroughly researched Japanese culture and incorporated it into this project.”

Connell added: “We also went to Hokkaido to research Ainu culture, and people familiar with Ainu culture introduced us to museums and folk artifacts, which we incorporated into the worldview of this work.”

Ghost of Yōtei releases on October 2nd, exclusively for PlayStation 5.
