Nintendo has announced that Super Mario Strikers will be the next game to come to Switch 2’s GameCube library. The game will be released on July 3rd as part of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.

Released in 2005 and known as Mario Smash Football in Europe, the first entry in the series introduced physical, fast-paced, 5v5 street football to the Mushroom Kingdom.

Players choose one of eight iconic characters to captain their team across the game’s seven stadiums (Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Wario and Waluigi) plus a selection of 4 side characters to complete their squad (Toad, Birdo, Hammer Bro and Koopa Troopa).

Much like other Mario sports spinoffs, Super Mario Strikers adds a powered-up twist to the world’s game with the inclusion of items such as shells, Bob-ombs and banana peels. Arguably one of the biggest gameplay features is the Super Strike, a high-powered shot that players can charge up, which counts as two goals if scored.

Super Mario Strikers will be the fourth game to feature as part of the Switch 2’s GameCube library, joining SoulCalibur 2, F-Zero GX and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Nintendo has already confirmed that several other GameCube titles are coming soon, including Chibi-Robo, Super Mario Sunshine, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Luigi’s Mansion, Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. So far, no dates have been given for these games.
