2K has announced the next entry in the Mafia series, Mafia: The Old Country. A short teaser for the game was revealed at Gamescom’s Opening Night Live event on Tuesday night.
Mafia: The Old Country will seemingly serve as a prequel to the Mafia trilogy, with the game being based around the origins of the Sicilian mafia in the 1900s.
“Uncover the origins of organized crime in Mafia: The Old Country, a gritty mob story set in the brutal underworld of 1900s Sicily,” a description for the game reads. “Fight to survive in this dangerous and unforgiving era, with action brought to life by the authentic realism and rich storytelling that the critically acclaimed Mafia series is known for.”
The game is currently in development at 2K’s Hangar 13 studio, the team behind both Mafia 3 and Mafia: Definitive Edition.
“What you just saw is the first early look at Mafia: The Old Country, a thrilling story set in 1900s Sicily during the origins of the Mafia,” said Nick Baynes, President of Hangar 13. “We’re going back to the roots of what fans love about the Mafia franchise, crafting a deep linear narrative, with that classic mob movie feeling.”
In May 2022, it was reported that the next entry of the Mafia series was in the early stages of development, something that Hangar 13 would later confirm as part of the series’ 20th anniversary celebrations. “While it’s a few years away and we can’t share anything more right now, we’re really excited to keep working on this beloved franchise and to entertain our players with new stories,” Hangar 13 general manager Roman Hladík said at the time.
