Sony reveals a new PS5 model

Following rumours and speculation earlier this year, Sony has officially revealed a new, smaller model of PS5. The new model will be available in disc and digital editions like the original versions that were released in 2020.

Sony claims that the new models have been reduced in volume by 30%, while also receiving weight reductions of 18% and 24% respectively. The new models will also come with 1TB of SSD storage, a 175GB increase over the 825GB SSD found in the current models.

Unlike the current digital model, the new design will allow users to attach a disc drive later, as it will be sold separately.

“To address the evolving needs of players, our engineering and design teams collaborated on a new form factor that provides greater choice and flexibility.” Said SIE’s Sid Shuman.

“The same technology features that make PS5 the best to play are packed into a smaller form factor, along with an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and a 1TB SSD for more internal storage.”

A new horizontal stand will also be included with the new PS5 models, while a new vertical stand will be sold separately. Sony says the new vertical stand will be “compatible with all PS5 models”.

As for pricing, the recommended retail prices for the new models and accessories are as follows:

  • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive: $499.99 / €549.99 / £479.99 / Â¥66,980
  • PS5 Digital Edition: $449.99 / €449.99 / £389.99 / Â¥59,980
  • Ultra HD Blu-Ray disc drive: $79.99 / €199.99 / £99.99 / Â¥11,980
  • Vertical stand: $29.99 / €29.99 / £24.99 / Â¥3,980

The new PS5s will be available in the US starting in November and will be released in other countries as part of a global rollout “in the coming months”. Sony has also said that once stock of the current PS5 sells out, the new model will replace it, making it the only one available.
