Halo Infinite gets another progression update, with more to come soon

Following backlash surrounding Halo Infinite’s progression, 343 Industries are providing another update to the challenge system. The changes are scheduled to go live later today, alongside the weekly challenge and store refresh.

The first update to the game’s progression system ensured that players would receive at least 50 XP for each game played, however fans felt this was still too stingy. For reference, it takes around 1000 XP to level up in Infinite’s battle pass, which means if you don’t complete any weekly challenges, it would take 20 matches to level up once.

In a thread on Twitter, 343 community manager John Junyszek shared a breakdown of the updated system coming later today. “After seeing how XP was earned with those changes, we noticed that players were starting their sessions with slower payouts than we’d like.” Junyszek explains. “To address this, we will be increasing the XP payout for the first 6 matches of each day.”

With the new update, players will receive 300 XP after their first match of the day, 200 XP for their 2nd and 3rd matches, 100 XP for games 4, 5 and 6, before returning to 50 XP per game from match 7 onwards. These changes mean that players should be levelling up their battle passes at least once after playing 6 matches.

“We believe this increase will help address those slower initial payouts while also benefiting those of you jumping on each and every day.”

While this change will be considered a welcome one from the Halo community, many still desire more widespread changes to the progression system, something that Junyszek acknowledges. “We know many of you want even larger changes and we’re committed to doing so, but those will take time. We made this update based on data and player feedback, and we’ll monitor its impact after we push it live tomorrow morning.”

“As always, keep sharing your feedback!”

Junyszek didn’t comment on the controversial Fracture: Tenrai event, nor any changes it may receive when the event returns in January, presumably alongside the popular Fiesta playlist. So far, 343 have been quick to react to player feedback on Halo Infinite’s multiplayer, which is an encouraging sign.

Halo Infinite’s multiplayer is available now, with the campaign launching on December 8th. Both are available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
