Epic Games acquires Fall Guys developer Tonic Games Group

Epic Games have announced that they have acquired Tonic Games Group, the parent company of Mediatonic, the developers of last year’s viral hit: Fall Guys.

Currently, details on the acquisition are light, so no information about how much such a purchase has cost Epic is available. Responding to how this may impact the popular battle royale, Mediatonic assured fans that no drastic change will be made to the game as a result of today’s news. “Your gameplay isn’t changing and neither is our mission to bring Fall Guys to as many players as possible.” a Q&A post on the Mediatonic blog read. “We are also still planning to bring Fall Guys to Nintendo Switch and Xbox.” The game will also continue to be available on PlayStation and Steam.

As for how the acquisition may benefit the game, the developer expressed interest in incorporating popular features found in Epic Games titles such as cross-play. “Fortnite and Rocket League already have tons of features we’d love to bring to Fall Guys—account systems, cross-play, squad vs squad modes, etc…We’re going to work hard on bringing more of these features to Fall Guys too!”

This isn’t the first high profile indie studio Epic Games have snapped up. Back in 2019, the gaming giant acquired Rocket League developer Psyonix, a move that has since enabled Rocket League to go free-to-play. As for the possibility of Fall Guys heading in the same direction, Mediatonic says there is “Nothing to announce right now!”

In a post on Epic’s website, Tonic Games Group CEO and co-founder Dave Bailey described Epic Games as “a home that was made for us.” Additionally, Paul Croft, co-founder and Chief Games Officer at Tonic Games Group shared his excitement to continue making games under Epic, as well as help bring success to other developers. “Whether it’s about making our own games the best they can be or empowering other game developers to take their content from a kernel of an idea to commercial success, we know that together we will be able to reach greater heights.”
