Destiny 2 players will have to re-download the game when Beyond Light launches

Good news! Destiny 2’s file size is set to shrink once the latest expansion, Beyond Light releases. The bad news? There’s a catch: you’ll have to redownload the entire game.

Bungie has stated that with the launch of Beyond Light, Destiny 2’s file size will be cut down by 30 to 40 per cent. Put into perspective, this reduction could see the hefty 120GB PS4 version shrink to as small as 71GB.

In the latest edition of ‘This Week At Bungie’, the developers’ weekly roundup, Destiny’s Engineering Director David Aldridge went into further detail about how they’ve managed to achieve this smaller install size.

Aldridge goes into a fair amount of detail, but the main takeaway’s are that the game size has been reduced from the culling of unused and replaced content. In addition, the reduction in file size will also be achieved by moving some content into the Destiny Content Vault, a subject that has brought about a fair amount of debate within the Destiny community.

The adjustments made to the game will also help to deploy bug fixes faster and aid in better controlling the install size “in the coming years.”

While smaller file sizes and faster bug fixes are certainly welcome improvements to players and their hard drives, there is a catch: players must re-download the entire game. This inconvenience was addressed by Aldridge and also outlined their solution for those keen to jump into Beyond Light as soon as it drops.

“We know this will be painful for those with slower or metered internet connections, and we’re sorry about that. To help mitigate this, we’re planning to enable Beyond Light preloads sometime in the evening of November 9, Pacific Time, which should give everyone at least 10 hours to download before the gates open.”

Destiny 2: Beyond Light releases on November 10th, the same day as Xbox Series X and Series S. For those subscribed to Xbox Game Pass, Beyond Light will be added to the catalogue the same day – no doubt it’ll be one of the first titles installed on people’s shiny new systems.
