Konami loses Champions League, Europa League and Super Cup licenses

It’s been announced that Konami’s partnership with UEFA is coming to an end, meaning Pro Evolution Soccer’s exclusive license for competitions like the Champions League, is soon to be over. Konami has stated that the deal will be over after this season’s Champions League final has taken place in Kyiv.

The Champions League League has featured in the Pro evolution soccer franchise since PES 2009, with UEFA’s other competitions (Europa League and Super Cup) being added soon after. Back in 2015, Konami did announce a renewal of the licenses for UEFA’s 3 competitions till 2019; judging by this announcement, it’s clear the the deal has reached a premature end.

This comes as bad news for PES, as the games have always struggled to reach the heights of the successful FIFA franchise ran by EA. With Konami’s deal coming to a close later this year, EA may look to move further ahead of the competition by snapping up the rights to some of club football’s most prestigious competitions.
