Xbox has officially revealed its disc-to-digital feature, which will allow players to use their physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs to access a digital copy for no additional cost.

The feature will launch on August 31st for members of the Xbox Insider program and will be available on Xbox Series X and supported Xbox One consoles.

In a post on Xbox Wire, Next Generation VP Jason Ronald outlined what players can expect from the new feature:

“Players have spent decades building their XBOX libraries,” Ronald writes. “Some games were purchased on disc. Some were purchased digitally. Many span multiple generations of hardware.

“Our goal is to make it easier for those libraries to move forward with players.

“Today we are introducing a feature that brings the benefits of digital to physical discs, giving players more flexibility in how they access and play supported games across the XBOX ecosystem. XBOX Insiders can begin testing next week on August 31.”

“This is part of our broader commitment to game preservation. As technology, devices, and distribution continue to evolve, preserving access to the games people own matters more than ever.”

Ronald goes on to say that disc-to-digital titles will be entitled to all the benefits that come with digital games, such as Xbox Play Anywhere and the ability to stream supported titles via Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Not all games will support the disc-to-digital feature at launch, but Ronald confirms that “thousands of titles” will be compatible on day one.

“While not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come.”
