Following the announcement of a Switch 2 version in April, acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy 14 comes to Nintendo’s hybrid console today. The Switch 2 version is the first time that the game has been made available on a Nintendo console.
To celebrate the launch, the Complete Edition and Complete Collector’s Edition of the game are both 30% off until August 8th. Here’s a breakdown of the launch pricing for each edition.
Complete Edition:
- Usual price: $59.99 / £44.99
- Launch price: $41.99 / £31.49
Complete Collector’s Edition:
- Usual price: $139.99 / £87.99
- Launch price: $97.99 / £61.59
The Starter Edition remains full price ($19.99 / £11.99).
The game’s famously generous free trial is also available on Switch 2, which lets players experience the base game, plus the first three expansions – Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers – completely free.
While the trial version of the game offers an enormous amount of content at no cost, there are some restrictions. Free trial players are unable to use the game’s social features, including the Party Finder, Chat, Chat Groups, registering friends, Free Companies, trading, the Market Board, and the Moogle Delivery service.
The free trial also includes a character level cap of 80 rather than the standard cap of 100, and access to 18 jobs instead of 22. PvP content, Ultimate Raids and housing features are also unavailable to free trial players.
Originally released in 2010, Final Fantasy 14 was a commercial failure and launched to a poor critical reception, scoring 49 on Metacritic. The game’s poor performance led to the removal of director Nobuaki Komoto and producer Hiromichi Tanaka, who were replaced by Naoki Yoshida, more affectionately known as Yoshi-P by fans.
In 2013, the game was relaunched as Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn, which completely overhauled the game’s server infrastructure, gameplay, interface, and story. Fast forward 13 years, and the game has more than 40 million registered players, with roughly 930,000 active monthly players.
