The next Call of Duty will not release on last-generation consoles

Almost six years after PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S launched, this year’s Call of Duty looks set to be released exclusively on current-generation consoles, bringing to an end a near 13-year run of annual Call of Duty releases on PS4 and Xbox One.

Earlier this week, rumours began to spread suggesting that this year’s Call of Duty, expected to be Modern Warfare 4, was coming to last-generation consoles. The speculation came after X user @HeyImAlaix, who has reliably reported on new content for Call of Duty previously, claimed that “MW4 is currently being playtested on PS4”.

Fast-forward 24 hours, and the official Call of Duty X account has responded, shooting down claims of a last-generation release. “Not sure where this one started, but it’s not true,” a post from the account read.

“The next Call of Duty is not being developed for PS4.”

The announcement will come as good news to Call of Duty fans, many of whom bellieve that last-gen releases are holding back the current-gen versions of recent games. Last year’s game, Black Ops 7, released on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC, as well as PS4 and Xbox One. The last-gen versions of the game were criticised for poor performance and image quality.

This year’s game still hasn’t been announced, with recent Call of Duty titles having been revealed around June. It’s possible that Activision could be waiting till the last minute to lock in a release date for the game, with many publishers keeping a close eye on Grand Theft Auto 6’s upcoming release in November.

Last month, it was announced that future Call of Duty titles would not be released on Game Pass at launch, as Microsoft lowered subscription prices for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, and Xbox Game Pass for PC.
