Microsoft has announced Gears of War: Reloaded, a “faithfully remastered and natively optimized” version of the original game, coming this August. Gears of War: Reloaded will also mark the franchise’s debut on PlayStation, having been an Xbox console exclusive for almost 20 years.
Developed by The Coalition, in partnership with Sumo Digital and Disbelief, Gears of War: Reloaded features all the enhancements found in the 2015 Ultimate Edition, as well as support for 4K resolution, 120 fps, cross-play, and cross-progression. It’s claimed that the game will also have “zero loading screens” when playing the campaign.
Gears of War: Reloaded will release on August 26th on Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC for $39.99. The game will also be available day one for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and Xbox Game Pass for PC subscribers. Those who already own Gears of War: Ultimate Edition will receive a free upgrade to Gears of War: Reloaded.
“Gears of War: Reloaded is a celebration of one of gaming’s most iconic franchises,” said Mike Crump, studio head at The Coalition. “Featuring 4K resolution, 120 FPS support, and the ultimate multiplayer experience with cross-progression and cross-play, across all platforms, this is the definitive way to experience the game that started it all.
“As we approach the 20th anniversary of Gears of War in 2026, we’re reflecting on what this franchise means. It’s about the stories we’ve told, the friendships we’ve built, and the unforgettable moments we’ve shared together. With Gears of War: Reloaded, we’re opening that door to more players than ever.”
During last summer’s Xbox Games Showcase, it was revealed that the next entry in the Gears of War series would be a prequel to the original game. Gears of War: E-Day will be an origin story which “depicts the horror of Locust invasion on Emergence Day through the eyes of Marcus Fenix.”
While no release date has been given for Gears of War: E-Day, The Verge‘s sources (Paywalled) have claimed that Microsoft could release the game sometime in 2025.
