Guerrilla Games’ restructures management, Co-Studio Director promoted to PlayStation Studios role

Guerrilla Games has announced that Co-Studio Director and executive producer Angie Smets has been promoted to a new role at PlayStation Studios.

In an update posted on Guerrilla Games’ website, the developer confirmed that Smets will join PlayStation Studios as Head of Development Strategy. A 20-year veteran at Guerrilla, Smets has co-led the studio alongside Jan-Bart van Beek and Michiel van der Leeuw following Co-Founder Hermen Hulst’s promotion to Head of PlayStation Studios in 2019.

“These past two decades at Guerrilla have been an absolute dream.” Smets said in a statement.”I feel privileged to have worked alongside some of the smartest and coolest people in the industry. I’m so grateful for everything I’ve learned alongside all the other Guerrillas.”

“We have accomplished so much as a team, and I’m incredibly proud of all the games we’ve shipped together.”

“A special shoutout to Jan-Bart van Beek and Michiel van der Leeuw.” Smets continued. “It feels like just yesterday that we were figuring out how to make and ship the first Killzone. Little did we know that we would eventually lead Guerrilla together.

“You’ve become like brothers to me, and there’s no way to thank you enough. I will miss you dearly.”

In addition to Smet’s departure, the developer also confirmed that it has undergone a management restructure, its second in three years. Jan-Bart van Beek will be staying on as Studio Co-Director and Art Director, alongside Joel Eschler (Studio Co-Director and Production Director) and Hella Schmidt (Studio Co-Director and General Manager).

Meanwhile, Michiel van der Leeuw will be stepping back from studio leadership to focus on his role as Technical Director, where he’ll continue to lead the future development of the Decima engine.

Following the release of Horizon’s ‘Burning Shores’ expansion, Guerrilla’s next project will be an online game set in the Horizon universe, while the developer also begins work on “Aloy’s next adventure”.
