XDefiant ditches Tom Clancy name

Tom Clancy’s XDefiant, the upcoming free-to-play shooter from Ubisoft San Francisco, has been renamed. The game will now simply be referred to as XDefiant.

The rebranding likely comes after the game’s reveal received a lukewarm reception, with many fans criticising Ubisoft for its use of the Tom Clancy name. Much of the late author’s work is centred around serious military themes and tactical scenarios, something XDefiant is believed to stray too far from.

It would appear that the rebranding process was swift and decisive, with the game’s website receiving a near-complete overhaul, with images and most of the game information now missing.

Speaking with Axios, Ubisoft said that some of the game’s factions will still be from the Tom Clancy universe, but that many new, non-Clancy factions will also be introduced. The publisher also announced more closed playtest sessions are on the way, with invites being sent to PC players this week. If you want a chance to join in on future playtests, you can sign up here.

Currently, XDefiant has no release date, but at launch, the game will be available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, PC, Google Stadia and Amazon Luna.
