God of War sequel delayed to 2022, PS4 version also announced

Santa Monica Studios have announced that the upcoming God of War sequel (reportedly titled Ragnarok), will no longer release in 2021 and will now release sometime in 2022.

In a statement posted on Twitter, the studio explained that the decision to delay the game was made so in order to prioritise the “safety and wellbeing of our team, creative partners and families”.

“Since the release of the next God of War teaser last year, we’ve been humbled by the amount of love our community has shown us” The statement read. “We’re incredibly grateful to see so many people excited to experience the next chapter of Kratos and Atreus’ journey.”

“We remain focused on delivering a top-quality game while maintaining the safety and wellbeing of our team, creative partners, and families.” The statement continued. “With this in mind, we’ve made the decision to shift our release window to 2022.”

“Thank you for all your continued support, we’ve got some exciting things in the works that we can’t wait to show you!”

The God of War sequel is the second PlayStation Studios title to be delayed to next year, after Gran Turismo 7 was pushed back to 2022 in February. In addition, PlayStation Studios’ boss Herman Hulst revealed in a Q&A that both Gran Turismo 7 and the God of War sequel will also release on PS4. “Where it makes sense to develop a title for both PS4 and PS5 — for Horizon Forbidden West, the next God of War, GT7 — we’ll continue looking at that” Hulst explained.

On the subject of Horizon Forbidden West’s release, Hulst believes that the game will meet the 2021 release window, but is not yet guaranteed. “For Horizon, we think we are on track to release this holiday season. But that isn’t quite certain yet, and we’re working as hard as we can to confirm that to you as soon as we can.”

The next God of War will now release sometime in 2022 for both PS4 and PS5.
