Returnal, the upcoming PS5-exclusive from Housemarque, has been delayed. The game will now release on April 30th, just over a month from the original March 19th release date.
The news was announced by Sony via a post on the PlayStation Twitter account, which revealed the additional month of development time would be used to polish the game.
“SIE and Housemarque have made the decision to move the release date in order to give the team extra time to continue to polish the game to the level of quality players expect from Housemarque.”
Returnal was revealed as part of the PlayStation 5 reveal event back in June 2020, and combines third-person shooter gameplay with rougelike mechanics. While this is fairly different to most of Housemarque’s games, Returnal also promises “explosive, bullet hell-fueled combat” proving that the studio are still invested in their arcade roots.
The game takes place on an unknown planet, where protagonist Selene must explore the remnants of an ancient civilisation and piece together memories in order to escape a lethal time loop.
Being a PS5-exclusive, Returnal also takes advantage of features such as 3D audio and haptic feedback. The game will also make use of the Dualsense’s adaptive triggers as a means of performing actions such as accessing a weapon’s alt-fire mode.
